Nutritional Features of Specific Ingredients

Alfalfa (pellet, stalk)

Historically alfalfa has been used by the Chinese as a herbal remedy to maintain health of the kidneys and bladder, and by the Arabs to ‘make their horses grow swift and strong’. It is a natural source of nutrients including cellulose / lignified fibre, protein rich in essential amino acids (lysine, threonine, tryptophan), b-carotene (pro-vitamin A) and vitamin E, calcium and linoleic acid. Alfalfa also contains approximately double the quantity of fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) than cereal grains such as wheat and barley. Studies have shown that FOS can promote and maintain a healthy digestive system in the rabbit. Both alfalfa pellets and alfalfa stalks are used in Russel. Whilst essentially the same ingredient, stalks are particularly useful as they are of a fibrous nature and assist the appropriate wear of teeth, and may help prevent dental overgrowth. In addition they can maintain a longer eating period, occupying the animal for longer.

Carrot (micronised)

Dried carrots contain moderate levels of protein and fibre, and are especially rich in b-carotene. They are extremely palatable to small animals.

Extrusions

Russel Rabbit Original contains beige coloured barley crescents and orange discs. As the name suggests, the main ingredient in the barley crescent is ground barley, a useful cereal containing slightly higher levels of fibre, FOS and calcium, and lower levels of starch than wheat. In addition the barley crescent contains full fat linseed (source of the polyunsaturated fatty acid, linoleic acid – see linseed) and limestone (source of calcium). The orange discs are based on ground wheat. Wheat is rich in starch, contributing energy to the animal, and contains a moderate level of protein. Although low in fibre, calcium and vitamins, it is relatively rich in phosphorus. The orange discs also contain oat feed (consists of oat bran and endosperm - a low energy ingredient which contains high levels of fibre and is therefore very useful), and wheat feed (again a good source of fibre, and also phosphorus). They also contain soya oil a source of another essential fatty acid linoleic acid (C18:2; w -6 fatty acid) and a vitamin & mineral supplement that is tailor-made to suit the rabbit. Such supplements are essential to promote the optimal health and performance of the animal, and are added essentially to balance the levels of nutrients in the finished product. In Supreme’s case the rabbit supplement is formulated to supply both major minerals and trace elements and vitamins according to NRC, 1977 and BSAVA, 1996.
