Nutritional Features of Specific Ingredients

Alfalfa (pellet, stalk)

Alfalfa is naturally rich in fibre (cellulose and lignified fibre), protein (essential amino acids such as lysine, threonine, tryptophan), b -carotene (pro-vitamin A) and vitamin E, calcium and linoleic acid. Alfalfa also contains some fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), reported to promote numbers of beneficial bacteria within the gut. It is important to develop and maintain an optimal gut flora especially in young rabbits after weaning.

Beet pulp (shreds)

Beet pulp is a by-product of the manufacture of sugar, and hence is palatable to small animals. Beet pulp is rich in fibre, and contains both soluble (fermentable) and insoluble (non-fermentable) fibres in a ratio of 1:2, proven to promote a gastrointestinal health through production of short chain fatty acids.

Carrot (micronised)

Dried carrots contain moderate levels of protein and fibre, and are especially rich in b-carotene. They are extremely palatable to small animals.

Extrusions

As the name suggests the beige wheat extrusion in Russel Junior has wheat as its primary component. Wheat is rich in starch, phosphorus and contains moderate levels of protein. These extrusions contain wheat feed a good source of fibre, FOS and phosphorus, and oat feed, another a low energy fibrous ingredient. The wheat extrusion also contains soya oil (see later) an excellent source of linoleic acid and a vitamin and mineral supplement tailor-made to suit the rabbit. Such supplements are essential to promote the optimal health and performance of the animal, and are added to balance the levels of nutrients in the finished product.

Field Beans (flaked)

Beans are a good source of protein and starch (which provides energy). They are high in lysine, but relatively low in methionine and cysteine. They contain low levels of fibre, but have a high phosphorus content. The rolling (cracking) process used to produce flaked beans improves their digestibility.

Linseed (lozenges)

Linseed lozenges have quite high oil levels, which is rich in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids e.g. linolenic acid (C18:3; w-6 fatty acids). It is reported to give bloom to coats and enhance immunity. In addition it is relatively rich in phosphorus.
