WHAT IS VITAMIN C? The chemical name for vitamin C is ascorbic acid. It is a water-soluble carbohydrate, an antioxidant and an essential nutrient. It is reported to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and is viewed as a useful prophyastic.
GUINEA PIGS ARE UNABLE TO MAKE VITAMIN C Most animals are able to manufacture their own vitamin C. However,
guinea pigs (like humans, monkeys and apes and fruit bats) are unable to, as they lack the
crucial enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase in the glucose-ascorbic acid pathway. |
