Weights of guinea pigs can vary enormously.  Using the energy density of the product, the quantity of food required to fulfil the guinea pig’s daily energy requirements (based on body weight and life stage) may be calculated.  These are shown in the table below.   Guinea Pigs have different levels of activity, and so the quantity fed should be adjusted to maintain body weight (weekly weighing is recommended to monitor the guinea pig’s weight).   Divide the daily amount into two, feed one portion in the morning and one in the evening.   It is important to ensure that all the ingredients in GERTY GUINEA PIG are eaten so that the correct quantity and balance of nutrients are absorbed.   If some ingredients are left, reduce the daily quantity of food until everything is eaten.

Changing to GERTY GUINEA PIG

GERTY GUINEA PIG should be introduced gradually into the guinea pig’s diet.  This care minimises the risk of digestive upsets that can occur with abrupt changes of diet.  Mix GERTY GUINEA PIG in the same feeding dish with the guinea pig’s normal food.  Slowly increase the quantity of GERTY GUINEA PIG and decrease the quantity of the previous food over a 10-day period.

Feeding Directions for Degus

Degus and guinea pigs have similar nutrient requirements.  Certainly they both require Vitamin C, high levels of protein and fibre, and so GERTY GUINEA PIG is also suitable for degus.  Recommended daily intakes are calculated as before, and are shown in the table below.  Directions for feeding and changing the diet are essentially the same for degus as they are for guinea pigs.
