Did you know...?
The name
hamster comes from the German word, hamstern, meaning to hoard. A hamster can build a
foodstore the size of 100 bags of sugar.
Hamsters
have poor eyesight, and don't see in colour. However, they have an excellent sense of
smell and good hearing.
All the
thousands of Golden hamsters kept in captivity between 1930 and 1971 were descendants from
just three hamsters, kept in the Hebrew Universtiy in Jerusalem in 1930.
All
hamsters have a scent gland on each hip, which can be often mistaken by pet owners as
something more sinister. These glands can resemble spots or moles and are usually more
noticable in males and lighter coloured hamsters.
