Nutrional Features of Specific Ingredients

Peanuts (whole, red skin)

Peanuts are rich in oil (unsaturated fatty acids) and protein. They contain little fibre, starch and sugar. Whole peanuts have a much higher fibre content due to the outer husk. This fibrous material provides interest for the rodent, in gnawing through the shell to obtain the reward, but also helps to maintain tooth wear.

Peas (whole, flaked)

Harry contains whole peas and flaked peas. Peas are a good source of protein, and are high in sugar and starch, contributing to energy levels. Although they contain low amounts of oil, the oil present is unsaturated. Peas also contain reasonable quantities of B vitamins.

Poultry meat (pellets)

Poultry meat meal is a by-product of the poultry industry that has been heat-treated, dried and ground. Poultry meat meal is very rich in protein, with a reasonable amino acid balance, and is a good source of oil and hence energy. Poultry meat meal is incorporated into pellets (Poultry Meat Pellets)

Straw (pellets)

The straw pellets are crumbles of ‘Nutritionally Improved Straw’ (NIS). They are an excellent source of digestible fibre and sodium.

Soya (oil, Hipro pellet)

Soya is rich in amino acids such as threonine, lysine, methionine and cysteine. In addition it has a high oil content, rich in linoleic acid (C18:2; w-6 fatty acids). The oil (soya oil) is extracted for the linoleic acid, and the residue is known as soya bean meal, which may then be incorporated directly into animal feeds or pelleted. Hipro soya pellets are produced from the meal (Hipro - hulls are not reblended, and are therefore lower in fibre, but higher in protein than other sources). These pellets are a good source of vitamins B and D.

Sunflower seeds

Sunflower seeds contain high levels of oil rich in linolenic acid (18:3; w-3 - reported to enhance skin & coat condition), and are an excellent source of protein (high levels of sulphur-containing amino acids) and phosphorus.

Wheat (torrified)

Wheat is rich in starch and phosphorus, contains some protein, but is low in fibre, calcium and vitamins. Wheat germ is a valuable source of Vitamin E.
