Nutritional
Features of Specific Ingredients Alfalfa pellets are naturally rich in fibre, protein, b-carotene (pro-Vitamin A), Vitamin E, calcium and linoleic acid. It also contains some fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), which may promote the numbers of beneficial bacteria within the gerbils gut. Carrot (micronised, home-dried) There are two different types of dried carrots used in Gerri Gerbil, micronised (bright orange flakes) and home-dried (pale orange irregular shaped). Both are used as not only do they contain moderate levels of protein and fibre, and are especially rich in b-carotene, but the different textures provide interest. Both are extremely palatable. Extrusions There are four different extrusions present in Gerri Gerbil, all of which are based on wheat. Wheat is rich in starch, phosphorus and contains moderate levels of protein. The red discs and green discs also contain oat feed (a low energy, high fibre ingredient) and linseed oil (see linseed), an excellent source of linolenic acids, important in maintaining skin and coat condition. As well as containing oat feed, the orange discs also contain wheat feed and soya oil (see soya), a source of linoleic acid. The supplement is also included in the orange discs, and balances levels of vitamins and minerals in the finished product. As the name suggests the poultry meat triangle contains poultry meat meal. This is a by-product of the poultry industry that has been heat-treated, dried and ground. Poultry meat meal is very rich in protein, with a good balance of amino acids including some taurine, and oil (which contributes energy). Linseed lozenges are a good source of protein and oil, which is rich in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids e.g. linolenic acid (C18:3, w-3 fatty acids). Linseed oil is reported to aid bloom in coat condition and enhance immunity. In addition it is relatively rich in phosphorus. Maize has the highest energy content of most cereals. It is rich in starch and contains twice the oil of wheat and barley. The maize kernel is lower and poorer in protein quality than wheat, and contains less calcium. Processing (flaking, rolling, and micronising) improves the digestibility of the maize. Whole maize and flaked maize are used to provide interest. |
