Did you know...?
The
Mongolian gerbil was discovered and classified in 1876 by the naturalist Pere David, who
also discovered the Giant Panda.
Gerbils
have a large middle ear - capable of detecting the soft wing beats of an owl.
Gerbils
have fur on the soles of their paws - to protect their feet from the intense heat of the
desert and to prevent them from sinking in the sand.
Gerbils
love sunflower seeds above any other food, but these should only be fed as an occasional
treat, as they are very high in fat and too many can be harmful.
