Features of Specific Ingredients

Alfalfa (pellet)

Alfalfa pellets are naturally rich in fibre, protein, b -carotene (pro-vitamin A), vitamin E, calcium and linoleic acid (C18:2; w-6 fatty acid). It also contains some fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), which may promote the numbers of beneficial bacteria within the rat’s gut.

Extrusions

There are four different extrusions present in Reggie Rat, all of which are based on wheat. Wheat is rich in starch, phosphorus and contains moderate levels of protein. The red discs and green discs also contain oat feed (a low energy, high fibre ingredient) and linseed oil (an excellent source of linoleic acid – see later), important in maintaining skin and coat condition. As well as containing oat feed, the orange discs also contain wheat feed and soya oil (a source linolenic (C18:3; w-6 fatty acids). The supplement is also included in the orange discs, and balances levels of vitamins and minerals in the finished product. As the name suggests the poultry meat triangle contains poultry meat meal. This is a by-product of the poultry industry that has been heat-treated, dried and ground. Poultry meat meal is very rich in protein, with a good balance of amino acids, and some oil (which contributes energy). Poultry meat meal is the only animal-derived protein used in the Supreme products. NO material of bovine origin or mammalian derived meat and bone meal is used.

Field Beans (flaked)

Beans are a good source of protein and starch (which provides energy). They are high in lysine, but relatively low in methionine and cysteine. They contain low levels of fibre, have a high phosphorus content. The rolling (cracking) process used to produce flaked beans improves their digestibility.

Linseed (lozenges)

Linseed lozenges are a good source of protein and oil, which is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids e.g. linolenic acid. It is reported to aid bloom in coat condition and enhance immunity. In addition it is relatively rich in phosphorus.

Maize (whole, flaked)

Both whole and flaked maize are used in Reggie. Maize has the highest energy content of most cereals, being rich in starch and containing twice the oil of wheat and barley. Maize is lower and poorer in protein quality than wheat, and contains fewer minerals (e.g. calcium). The flaking process improves the digestibility of the maize.
