Here comes the sun

Keep your small pets sitting pretty this summer
Warm sunshine is as welcome to our small pets as it is to us. But its important to be sun smart with your family pets if theyre to remain cool customers the whole summer long. So what steps should you take to make the lazy hazy summer days as good for your pet as they are for you? Nick Thomas is the Pet Health and Care Co-ordinator at Supreme Petfoods and hes provided some expert hints and tips to bear in mind this summer.

Fresh air and exercise
At the first sign of summer, re-position your rabbit or guinea pigs hutch. Most pets will enjoy a spot of sunbathing, but always make sure theyve got shade at hand to keep cool in the midday glare.

Thirst for thought
Dehydration is a major concern for small pets in the summer. Regularly check that your pets water bottle is full and free from any obstructions.

Be Belly careful
Too much lush summer grass may affect your pets digestive system. A specialist rabbit or guinea pig food such as Russel Rabbit or Gerty Guinea Pig will make sure theyre getting the nutrients, fibre, vitamins, minerals and prebiotics they need to keep healthy.

Clean and tidy
Regularly groom and clean pets in the summer. Rummaging in the garden can leave them dirty and sticky. Warm weather and flies are an uncomfortable combination for any pet.

Gumming up
If you are worried about your rabbit or guinea pig, gently checking its gums will provide an instant health report. Very pale gums can indicate a problem. If you are worried about your pets health, take them to your vet for a proper check-up.
