CHOOSING A FERRET AND BRINGING IT HOME
Before buying a pet you must make sure that you can care for it properly.

You MUST be able to:
  1. provide the right housing
  2. have room for it to exercise
  3. feed and water it daily
  4. handle it daily
  5. exercise it daily
  6. groom it regularly
  7. clean out the cage daily to control germs
  8. check for signs of illness or disease
  9. take your pet to the vet for regular health checks and other procedures
  10. know someone who will look after it for you when you are away

Once you are happy that you can provide everything that your new pet will need you can then choose the perfect ferret for yourself. Make sure that you have everything ready for him before you bring him home, so he can go right in to his new home as soon as you arrive and spend the first 24hrs getting used to his new environment. Dont forget that he will be missing his brothers and sisters. He will like you to talk to him and will soon get used to the sound of your voice. We suggest you dont handle him too much for the first day or two, but give him plenty of clean water and some food, and allow him to get accustomed to his new home. You will soon know when he has settled as he will begin to eat, drink and groom himself.

Which Ferret will you choose?
Originally there were two ferret coat colors (albino and sable). Now there are a wide variety of colors, patterns and markings available. The 8 most common colors are:
  • Albino (white coat with red eyes)
  • Sable (dark brown body, black feet, masked face)
  • Dark eyed white (all white with dark eyes)
  • Black (black coat, no pattern)
  • Topaz (light taupe)
  • Champagne (golden)
  • Siamese/Chocolate (lighter color of sable, with brown feet)
  • Red (mahogany colored)
The different combinations of colors, patters and markings produce an infinite number of variations. Some examples of patterns could be Roan (a mixture of colored and white hair) or Dalmatian (with spots and blotches on a white coat). Markings can be a mask of color found across the face, mitts and feet, or a blaze (white on forehead and chest).
