What to check for in a Windows 95 internet setup
  1. The programs are installed - look for
    • Start/Programs/Internet Explorer
    • Start/Programs/Outlook Express
    • Start/Programs/Internet Mail
    • Start/Programs/Internet News

  2. Dial-up Networking is installed - look for
    • Start/Programs/Accessories/Dial-Up Networking and also check
    • Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network

    There should be Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP entries where it says "The following network components are installed".

  3. A Fastnet Dial-up Networking icon is installed - select
    • Start/Programs/Accessories/Dial-Up Networking
    and look for a Fastnet icon.

  4. Network settings: Go to
    • Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network
    Examine the Primary Network Logon drop-down box. Make sure it says "Windows Logon".

  5. Highlight TCP/IP in the list of network components. Then click on the Properties button. A new window will appear with six tabs:
    TabSetting
    IP Address"Obtain an IP address automatically"
    WINS Configuration"Disable WINS Resolution"
    Gatewayblank
    Bindings"Client for Microsoft Networks" ticked if that's in the list of network components else blank
    Advanced"None"
    DNS Configuration"Disable DNS"
    Click the OK button if you make any changes. You will then need to restart Windows 95 to make them work.

  6. Fastnet icon settings: Now go to
    • Start/Programs/Accessories/Dial-Up Networking
    and right-click on the Fastnet icon. Select Properties from the menu.

  7. To check your modem setup, click on the Configure button. If you have a 14k4 modem, the maximum speed should be set at 57600. If you have a 28k8 or above modem, it should be 115200. Click on OK or Cancel

  8. To check your PPP settings, click on Server Type. Here's what you should see:
        Advanced options
    	[ ]	Log on to network
    	[V]	Enable software compression
    	[ ]	Require encrypted password
        Allowed network protocols
    	[ ]	NetBEUI
    	[ ]	IPX/SPX Compatible
    	[V]	TCP/IP
    
    where a [ ] is a blank box and a [V] a box with a tick in it.

  9. Click on TCP/IP settings. A new window opens. Here's what you should see:
        	[*]	Server assigned IP address
    	[ ]	Specify IP address
    	[*]	Server assigned name server addresses
    	[ ]	Specify name server settings
    	[V]	Use IP header compression
    	[V]	Use default gateway on remote network
    
    where a [*] is a radio button (circle with a round spot in it).

  10. Click OK in the three windows to finish. Try doubleclicking on the Fastnet icon to connect to Fastnet.
