To help promote childrens charity,
CHATA - which has recently launched a new service for young patients in the area -
children from Southampton Generals cardiac unit had a surprise visit from a giant
rabbit and guinea pig bearing Christmas gifts!
The charity (Children in Hospital and Animal Therapy Association) was
formed by Sandra Stone, a former childrens nurse, to pioneer the benefits of animal
therapy for sick children.
Initially, the charity only had the resources to visit London
hospitals. However, with the help of regular sponsorship from Hampshire company, Supreme
Petfoods, CHATA is now able to launch its service to patients in Southampton.
CHATAs trained team of volunteers take their pets to visit
seriously ill children, bringing considerable support and comfort and helping to improve
the quality of life of children often spending long periods in hospital.
Southamptons first volunteer is Ann Blairman with her cocker
spaniel, Kipps, and she has been quickly followed by Jennifer Evens and her pet rabbit,
Jamie. However, CHATA is always on the hunt for new volunteers and would welcome a call
from anyone with a history of working with children and animals.
Sabrina Stroud, from sponsors Supreme Petfoods, said: "We are
delighted to offer our support to CHATA and, being a local company, we are pleased that
the charity can now put a smile on the faces of local children, particularly during the
Christmas period which is always a difficult time for those in hospital and their
families."
